State Fair Fiber

Spun up and Navajo plied to preserve the color changes.

I still really like the colors. It's hanging to dry.

One more knitted hat started, from left-over handspun. A few years ago, I wove Ben a scarf from this yarn.

Scarf's long gone...

He's been reading in funny positions since he learned to read. 20 years old, and he's still a contortionist.

Freckle Song

Not a terribly exciting video, but this my most recent favorite song:

Chuck Prophet - Freckle Song

Play it, open another window, and go look at something else on the net - you'll still hear it, even when you're looking at other pages.

You just gotta like it, doncha?

One home, one away

Ben is home from the Boundary Waters.

He had a fabulous time with his girlfriend's family.

Turns out, he was in many of the same lakes I had been in, more than thirty years ago.

Portaging, looking like a voyageur.

Ben and Becky: one on each side of the US/Canada border.

Girl of the House has gone to spend the week with Uncle Harlan and Aunt Coleen in Sioux Falls. Little dog Chip even went to visit!

Alphabetized Meme

I stole this meme from Ordinary Girl.

Organize your music file alphabetically by artist then track, and name the first song that's at the top of the list for every letter (or number, see my list below) by artist and song name. Just for fun.

(I know I did a similar meme a while ago, but I like music...)

#: 4 Non Blondes - Calling All the People
A : AFI - Bleed Black
B: The B-52s - Bushfire
C: Cab Calloway - A Chicken Ain't Nothin But A Bird
D: D&B - Macarena
E: Eagle Eye Cherry/Santana - Wishing It Was
F: The Fabulous Thunderbirds - Amnesia
G: Gabriel Yared - Ada and Inman
H: Halfcocked - Bad Reputation
I: Imogene Heap - Hide and Seek
J: Jack White - Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over
K: KD Lang - Golden Slumbers/The End
L: Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
M: Macy Gray - A Moment to Myself
N: Natalie Merchant - Break Your Heart
O: Oasis: Cast No Shadow
P: P.O.D./Santana - America
Q: Queen - '39
R: RadioHead - the Bends
S: Sacred Harp Singers - Idumea
T: Tara MacLean - Hold Me Jordan
U: Usher - Yeah
V: Valeria - Rhythm of the Night
W: The Wailin' Jennys - Arlington
X: none
Y: Yonder Mountain String Band - A Father's Arms
Z: Zachary Richard - Come On, Sheila

Weird - three of these songs are from the Cold Mountain Soundtrack. Several more are from other soundtrack albums.

Man, the variety on the iPod is why I love shuffle!

We went to the State Fair

And I bought fiber! (imagine that!)

Paul and I have been to the Minnesota State Fair every year since 1992. It was our second official date.

We spent Friday at the fair. We go early, we eat, drink, and spend the day people watching. Traditionally, we don't buy anything we need to carry.

However, this pretty little ball of dyed fiber was calling out to me. It's 8 oz of "roving of sheep of unknown parentage" from HoneyGold Acres.

Ben's gone this week. He's in the Boundary Waters with his girlfriend and her family.

Before he left, he talked Paul into making a quick trip back to Camp Pepin. He needed to pick up his sailboat!

He rescued an sailboat from the camp, and wasn't able to get it home on his Jeep. The boat hadn't been used for a few years, and needs a few repairs.

Yes, every college student (in Iowa, well known for its lakes) needs a sailboat!

I got him to model his new hat before he left.

He likes to wear it turned up. "Looks more like a sailing cap, mom."

Girl of the House models the latest orange handspun hat.

Ben's hat is big enough to cover his ears for winter, should he ever flip the cuff down.

I spent last weekend doing some sundyeing.

The roving is alpaca.

The locks are from a white Coopworth fleece I found hiding deep in my stash. It was filthy dirty with lots of second cuts.

It took longer to wash than it did to card and spin!

It did make a nifty textured yarn, though. The locks are the blue on the left and the strange color on the top.

I plied the Colorado spindling yarn and the merino/silk.

I see more hats in my near future.

A few more pictures from Colorado. We camped in three different campgrounds: one high in the mountains (11,300 ft), one on a beautiful mountain stream, and one on a large reservoir.

A lot of variety within one area!

We had some great morning coffee spots.

This was our early morning view in the Slumgullion National Forest Service campground. We watched the sun rise on the mountains.

When the dogs are still adjusting to the time zone change, you are forced to rise early!

Our favorite campsite was at Gate Bureau of Land Management campground. Only 8 campsites, and $5 per night.

Here's the view from the camper doorway.

Definitely our favorite coffee spot!

For our final night, we camped at Stevens Creek National Park Service campgrounds on the Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Not much shade, but the views were amazing.

Colorado knitting

I had lots of road knitting time as we drove to Colorado.

Hats are great road knitting.

Around and around and around.

I finished two hats and started a third.

This is the purple from sundyeing earlier this summer.

Girl of the House was having fun being a silly model.

Hat number two has already been stolen by Ben. It was knit from some of the finn fleece I washed and carded this summer. I can't find it in his mess of a room. I'll have to catch him when he's home.

Hat number three, also from the sundyeing earlier this summer.

I worked on Rogue. The back is complete, and I'm coming up the fronts. I knitted up the yarn I brought. (See, you
CAN'T ever bring enough yarn! It IS possible to run out!)

I love the cabling on this sweater.

I spindled up the four ounces of the last batch of sundyed fiber. Remember the stuff that sat on the deck forever?

I didn't get it plied, though.

I'll have to post actual trip pictures soon. I'm going through them all, slowly.

We drove through Friday night, stopping to nap in the camper for a few hours, just east of Grand Island, NE. When the sun came up, we cut off the highway at Kearney, NE, and took local highways to Denver. It's always more fun to take the backroads.

There's so much to see.

But it was HOT! 104 degrees. See, I took a picture to prove it!

Ooh, I forgot these signs cycle temp and time. And I didn't check my photo til I got home...

Well, you'll have to take my word for it. It was hot!

At last: a cooling view of the Rockies!

Back to work...

Monday morning after vacation.

Can I call in with the plague?

It is a treatable disease.

We're outta here!

We're off to Colorado for a week.

No cell signal, no computers - just mountain quiet.

See you soon!
